Description

UPOTTERY
ST 10 NE
6/97 Culverwell
-
- II
House, former keeper's cottage. Circa 1880-90. Local stone and flint rubble with
Bathstone ashlar dressings; stone rubble stacks with Bathstone ashlar chimneyshafts;
slate roof.
Plan: basically an L-plan building facing south-east. The left room, the parlour,
is articulated as a crosswing projecting backwards and very slightly forward and it
has an outer lateral stack. The rest of the front block contains a central entrance
hall and a left room with end stack which is shared by the kitchen behind in a lean-
to in the angle of the 2 wings. The main house is 2 storeys.
Exterior: deliberately asymmetrical 2:1-window front of timber mullion-and-transom
windows. The windows have ashlar quoins and chamfered reveals. The first floor
windows are gabled half dormers with shaped kneelers and slate coping (there are
others on the other sides). The front doorway is central; it is a 2-centred arch
containing the original plank door hung on strap hinges with fleur-de-lys finials
and there is a gabled porch in front with a 2-centred arch outer arch. The main
roofs are hipped.
Interior not inspected but is said to contain original joinery detail.
Culverwell is one of several attractive C19 buildings in Upottery built on the
Sidmouth Estate.
