WHIMPLE

10/239 Corner Stores Cottage and
- Silhouettes

GV II

Cottage. C18 and C19, C20 additions. Plastered cob and stone rubble; stone rubble
stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof to the oldest part, the rest is
slate.
Plan: 2-room plan cottage on a north - south axis. In fact the southern end room
is the oldest part, a probably C18 1-room plan cottage facing north with a rear
lateral stack. In the C19 an extension was built onto the former front and the new
house turned to face east. The extension included the main stair and a room to
right with gable-end stack. In the C20 a lean-to outshot was added onto the east of
the C18 cottage section; this is now Corner Stores and outshots to rear of the C19
extension is now Silhouettes. Main house is 2 storeys.
Exterior: is most irregular. The exposed front of the house has a 2-window front
of C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars with front doorway to left containing a
C20 panelled door. The C19 extension slate roof is gable-ended and the thatch roof
of the older part is like a crossing to left and hipped both ends.
Interior: not inspected.
This irregular arrangement of buildings complement a group of thatch-roofed cottages
close by to west.
