Small house. Circa early C17, altered probably in C19. Rubble walls, rendered at
front. Scantle slate roof with probably C17 crested ridge tiles, gable ended.
Rendered rubble gable end stacks with dripcourse at top. Left hand stack is in
unusual circular form above the ridge with up-ended slates at the top.
Plan at present is of 2 principal rooms with central stairhall. The stairs have
been inserted in the C19 into a screens passage. The original stairs were beside
the lower end stack. It is possibly that the house has been truncated at the lower
end and was originally 3 room and through passage but there is no direct evidence of
this.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front of early C20 2-light casements with glazing
bars. C20 gabled porch to right of centre with C20 part-glazed door. Leanto C20
glazed porch to left end.
Interior is surprising for the high quality of its features. 2 original roof
trusses have morticed cambered collars, threaded purlins and ridge, all are clean.
The left hand room has a complete ornate beamed ceiling with 2 ovolo moulded cross
beams with the original ovolo moulded joists which have hollow step stops. The
fireplace has a wooden lintel on which the chamfer curves down at the ends as if it
was once continued on the jambs. Dividing this room from the passage is a plank and
muntin screen with chamfered muntins and mason's mitres to the head beam above each
panel. The other room has one chamfered cross beam.
This must originally have been a good quality small C17 house many of whose features
are preserved in its unspoilt interior.
