Water reservoir. Dated 1812 for Richmond Corporation. Coursed square stone.
Cistern set in side of hill collects stream water which was formerly conveyed by
lead pipes to Richmond. The only visible part of the structure is the triangular-
sectioned end wall, which has a plinth with iron overflow spout projecting from
centre into stone basin with iron grating in base from which water would be
redirected into stream bed. Above spout is rectangular opening approximately O.75m
high x 0.5m wide with raised surround having monolithic lintel with semi-circular-
cut soffit, raised impost band, and iron shutter. To either side are stones
inscribed on left 'William Close and on right 'Esq Mayor
W Denham' Chamberlain'.
Coping forming pediment with impost band is partially disintegrated, the stones.
on the ground in front of the cistern. Inscription on apex stone, which is also
dislodged and on ground, and on the stone below apex reads: 'This reservoir was
erected and lead pipes laid for the conveying of water to the town of Richmond
at the expense of the Corporation in the year 1812'.
