About 1840. This building was erected as a replacement of an earlier tollhouse,
which was demolished during the construction of the railway line (from Bishopstoke
to Gosport); its design follows a typical earlier pattern. Two storeys. The sides
are plain, but the corner (with Holmeland Lane) has a half-hexagon form. Hipped
slate roofing. Walling in red brick, the main feature having yellow dressings;
widely projecting double dentil eaves (in alternate colouring), quoins, first floor
band, rubbed flat arches to ground floor openings and round arches above with
keystones (these openings all recessed), plinth, stone cills. Sashes: fanlight to
central door, above which is a street lamp on wrought iron bracket. Above the
doorway the opening is boarded (for toll charges?). Coupled chimneys.
