GV II

Gate lodge. c1891 by Norman Shaw. Squared tooled stone with ashlar dressings;
graduated Lakeland slate roof. T-plan. North elevation: single storey, 3 bays.
Chamfered plinth, moulded strings above and below windows, moulded eaves cornice.
Projecting centre bay has pedimented gable and bow window with three 12-pane
sashes and cornice, similar window on right return; narrower left gabled bay
shows similar window. Extruded porch to right has round-headed arch and cornice.
All openings in Gibbs surrounds. Stack to left and ridge stack, both with moulded
strings and cornices. Rear elevation 2 bays, with paired 12-pane sashes in
surrounds with alternating raised blocks; attached yard wall to right, linking
to Chesters Museum (qv) has central gateway with rusticated rock-faced piers.
