Garden walls. C17 altered in C18 and C19. Outer face of south wall and inner
face of east and west walls brick in irregular, largely stretcher, bond;
inner face of north wall English Garden Wall Bond 1 and 3; other faces roughly-
coursed rubble; a section incorporated in the south wall, and another at the
north-east corner have long roughly-shaped quoins of C17 character. Irregular
quadrilateral plan with the centre part of the west side formed by the rear
elevation of the Stable Block (q.v.).

Walls generally c.3 metres high with low arched coping. North wall has
inserted boarded door near centre and blocked heating ducts to rear. A
section of both north and east walls, extending c.15 metres from the north-
east corner, have an external set-back at mid-height and look of C17 character;
blocked furnace arch in east-facing part. East wall has central boarded door
in alternating-block surround; short extension beyond south-east corner of
garden has Gothick 4-centred arch with ashlar dressings, holding C19 fancy
wrought-iron gate. South wall has central chamfered segmental arch with
ashlar dressings and keystone dated '1863', and internal set-back at mid-
height over most of length. West wall has segmental arches to either side
of stable block, that to the north with boarded double doors.

Historical Note. Samuel Salkeld (1636-l699) was a celebrated gardener and is
recorded as producing fruit 'in as great variety and perfection as in most
places in the south'. Parts of the walls would appear to be of his period;
if the heating ducts at the north-east corner are original, they must
constitute a very early example of the type.

Attached greenhouses and small outbuildings are not of special interest.
