Description

LEEDS

SE3033NW LANDS LANE
714-1/76/237 (East side)
29/03/96 No.26

GV II

Shop and offices with attached gas lamp. c1900, altered C20.
Brick, probably steel-framed, slate roof.
4 storeys, 1 bay. Ground floor: shop window and entrance left,
entrance to upper-floor offices right. Upper floors: a
full-height moulded brick arch, shallow moulded pediment
flanked by short octagonal turrets. The arch is entirely
glazed with wood-framed showroom windows: canted bays with
round-arched frames to 1st and 2nd floors, a semicircular
window with glazing bars to 3rd floor. Gas lamp: cast-iron;
bracket fixed to left return; lantern with ventilator at apex,
restored.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
In 1906 the shop was used by Hawke and Hendrie, fancy drapers.
The building is similar to Nos 22-24 New Market Street (qv);
the bay window possibly had a shallow pediment originally and
the design of storeyed bay windows within a round arch is
prominent at Percy Robinson's premises for Messrs Hepworth,
Nos 2 & 4 Duncan Street (qv).
(Robinson's Directory of Leeds: 1905-1906).
