Terraced house. c1825. Probably designed by Amon Wilds and
Charles Augustin Busby. Stucco. Roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys and attic over half basement. 3-window
range. Elevation treated as full-height and full-width
segmental bay. Steps up to flat-arched entrance which is
paired with that of No.21 (qv), both set under shallow
prostyle porch consisting of fluted Doric columns and
entablature. To the left of entrance 2 round-arched windows.
Chamfered rustication to ground floor. First-floor balcony
with cast-iron railings and brackets. All windows above ground
floor are flat arched with architraves, except for those in
the attic which have projecting sills only; each first-floor
window has, in addition, entablature with floating cornice;
balconettes to second-floor windows. Storey band between
second and third floors; dentil cornice between third floor
and attic storey. Cornice to attic with balustraded parapet
above.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Railings to stairs and area. Plaque on ground floor reads:
"Here lived from 1833 to 1838 Gideon Algernon Mantell,
Geologist."
Nos. 20-31 Old Steine (consecutive) form a group.
