3 terraced houses treated as a single composition under a
broad pediment. 1818. By Amon Wilds. Stucco, roof obscured by
pediment.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over basement, one window each. Ground
floor decorated with banded rustication. Narrow, flat-arched
entrances with overlights to Nos 4 and 6 either side of a
broad, central segmental-arched porch; the entrance to No.5 is
within the porch and is a replacement; Nos 4 and 6 have one
round-arched window to ground floor, that to No.4 with sashes
of original design, that to No.6 altered in part; No.5 has a
segmental-arched window; the upper floors are more clearly
symmetrical, No.5 having broader windows: the first floor has
flat-arched French windows,those to No.5 tripartite with
mullions treated as fasces; all 3 windows have bracketed
verandahs with concave canopies notable for their decorative
railings and supports which are treated as columns in ornate
ironwork with Ionic capitals supporting an elaborate and
fantastic ornate entablature; sill band to low second-floor
windows; cornice; lunettes to attic; the fasces continue
through the upper windows of No.5; secondary cornice; shallow
pediment terminating in round-arched antefixae.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Cast-iron railings with spearhead finials to area; the broad
flight of steps in front of the houses flanked by squat
columns carrying lanterns surmounted by crowns which
commemorate the visits of George IV to the house of his Lord
Chancellor, Lord Combermere.
