Villa, now house and flat, and attached railings. c1825-1830
with later additions and alterations including C20 garage to
left. Builders, William Buddle, Sr and Jr of Nos 19 and 21
Beauchamp Hill (qv). Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco
to front, right and garden facades, Welsh slate roof and
cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement to right, 3 first-floor
windows, right side slightly recessed.
Garden facade has 2 storeys with basement, 2 bows to full
height (4 first-floor windows).
Street facade, off-centre entrance in projecting gabled porch,
roll-edged step to 4-panel door, the lower panels rolled, in
pilastered doorcase with side-lights under projecting hood on
brackets. Oculus with decorative glazing bars to gable.
Further entrance to right a 4-panel door with plain reveals.
Windows: an 8/8, 6/6 and 3/3 sash, all with plain reveals and
sills. First floor: three 6/6 sashes in plain reveals, sills.
Basement has tripartite sliding sash, each 1/1. Roof
half-hipped to right. End and roof stacks.
Garden facade: ground floor has 10-pane French windows. 6/6
sashes to first floor with sills on acanthus brackets.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings have anthemion-in-circle
motif.
HISTORICAL NOTE: originally planned as Bertie Circus, the
houses were constructed to face inwards with the present
garden facades as the main fronts.
The Board of Health Map of 1852 indicates that Nos 15 & 17
Beauchamp Hill was included in that architectural scheme. When
laid out c1825 Clarendon Crescent was known as Back Lane,
however DG Squirhill's Survey of 1838 shows it with its
present name, presumably by which time the scheme for a Circus
had been abandoned.
The original architectural scheme for Nos 1-9 (consecutive)
Clarendon Crescent and Nos 15 & 17 Beauchamp Hill (qv) with

its series of full-height bows is best seen from the rear (or
garden) facade.
