The Grove House

House. 1763, extended 1784. For Richard Haynes (date on north
stack) probably upgrading an earlier house. Stucco over brick
with applied timbering (added after 1878) and tile roof, end
stacks.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Main garden
facade: 8/8 outer sashes in flush frames; first-floor has 6/6
sash to centre; second floor has central blind window; ground
floor has central glazed door. Main entrance to right return a
6-panel door with sidelights with glazing bars. Extension to
rear.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the house extended after Haynes's second
marriage in 1784; bought 1829 by Robert Smirke for his wife's
sisters.
