31-AUG-04 yard of Saint Michael's Church

GV II
War Memorial. 1919. Temple Moore [executant Leslie Moore]. Sandstone. Cross with tapering shaft of octagonal section which has a moulded knop and socle. The arms of the cross are cusped. The cross stands above an octagonal plinth which dies to a square body via broaches. Below are 3 steps.
The inscription is in Gothic script to the plinth and steps and reads: "IN PROUD AND/AFFECTIONATE/MEMORY OF THESE/MEN WHO FELL IN THE/GREAT WAR 1914-1918". A design for a cross was commissioned from Temple Moore and presented to a parish meeting in October 1919. Following Temple Moore's death the executant architect was his son, Leslie Moore. The memorial was dedicated at a service on May 8th 1921 and cost £150 17s.
The cross forms a group with the church of St. Michael, Coxwold [q.v.].
