Description

ST TUDY

1556/0/10018 B3266
01-OCT-10 Guidestone 400m NE of Tregooden

GV II
Guidestone with capstone dating from the early-C18 standing in its original location, close to a later listed milestone (67784). The stone includes a 1.83m high ovoid granite pillar supporting a 0.20m thick capstone whose four faces are each deeply incised in Roman capitals with the name of a Cornish place. One face is inscribed "LISKD" for Liskeard, another inscribed "CAMELFO" has been truncated by damage to a corner and would have originally read Camelford. Another which now reads "TUDY" would have originally read ST TUDY. The final face reads "BODMIN".

HISTORY:
In 1697, under Acts of Parliament, Justices in Highway Sessions were authorised to require surveyors of highways to set up direction stones or posts at cross highways. The guidestone 400m NE of Tregooden forms part of an unusual resulting group of early C18 guidestones with capstones on the roads between Bodmin and Camelford.
