The First World War inscription reads: TOWNSHIP OF RIPLEY/ ROLL OF HONOUR/ TO THOSE WHO SERVED IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919/ KILLED IN ACTION/ (NAMES OF FALLEN)/ SERVED IN H. M. FORCES/ (NAMES OF THOSE WHO SERVED AND SURVIVED)/ GOD SAVE THE KING.

The Second World War plaque is inscribed: TOWNSHIP OF RIPLEY/ ROLL OF HONOUR/ TO THOSE WHO SERVED IN/ THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945/ KILLED IN ACTION/ (NAME)/ SERVED IN H. M. FORCES/ (NAMES OF THOSE WHO SERVED AND SURVIVED)/ GOD SAVE THE KING.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England, both as a result of the huge impact the loss of three quarters of a million British lives had on communities and the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss. One such memorial was raised at Ripley by the Ingilby family of Ripley Castle as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community, who served in the First and Second World Wars.  It commemorates 51 local servicemen who served during the First World War, five of whom died.  Following the Second World War, a dedication was added to commemorate the 28 local servicemen who served and the one that died in that conflict.

In 2011 the bronze plaque on the memorial was conserved with the help of grant aid from War Memorials Trust.
