Description

18th century, remodelled 1817-18 and subsequently, with
additions. Symmetrically-arranged stables with kennels; now
part domestic. 3 blocks arranged in U-plan around open
courtyard, latter walled at N with gateway. Rubble-built,
mostly with stugged or droved ashlar dressings; whitewashed,
most margins painted. Roofed with graded slates. 2 tall
parallel ranges, 2 storeys (upper loft storey), ball-finialed
gables, N gables each formerly with oculus, one now altered;
low linking S range with kennels and disused bothy. Parallel
ranges both altered in 10th century; E range mostly in
domestic use, stop-chamfered 18th century doorways at S end
below louvred square loft openings, former door lintel dated
1818; lean-to temporary shelter at N; W range with low ground
storey, wide flat archway now a door, with forestair
alongside; large garage slapping earlier/mid 10th century.

Statement of Interest

1818 lintel initialled "J C(arruthers), MI"; re-cut stone

above garage inscribed "AIS rebuilt 1817".
