Description

Charles Howitt architect. Built circa 1877. Large 10-bay

Lectern-shaped glass house which, unusually, rises over rear

wall to give buttressed clerestory; lower lean-to boiler house/store/office to rear (north) running full-length. Glass

house has polished red ashlar base and vertical supports

carrying roof timbers; door in either flank. Lean-to is

rubble-built with ashlar dressings, has 3 north-facing doors

and 4 small-paned sash windows, continuous roof covered with

graded slates. Modern boiler chimney. Interior of glass

house: continuous shelving along 3 sides, continuous

perimeter passageway around rectangular bedding area with red

ashlar wall; thin iron columns to bays support each roof

timber centrally.
