Description

Circa 1920. Single storey and attic, rectangular plan cottage. Painted brick base course, harl above, and red tile roof. W elevation with tripartite, lean-to loggia at centre and to right, with segmental archway and short flight of steps; windows flanking; piend-roofed

projecting window to outer left. Timber mullioned attic bipartite. E gable end with flat-roofed modern porch and fire escape. Irregular openings to side elevations.

Statement of Interest

Plaque to right of doorway, under loggia, declares "Pettie Cottage gifted by Miss Elizabeth Pettie Edin in 1920", and continues that it was intended specifically for children from the Canongate Parish, Edinburgh.

Part of the former Humbie Children's Village built in 1906 in Arts and Crafts style. The village was built to provide holiday accommodation for children with disabilities and was made up of separate cottages with a hall and school. It became a residential care facility in the later 20th century before closing in the 1990s and being redeveloped into private housing in 2008.
