Description

Mid 19th century. Surviving tunnel of complex lime kiln built into hillside, currently in use as store and workshop. (Skinner - Type U1). Arched tunnel of coursed sandstone; 12 feet high, 13 feet wide and 42 feet long with 3 draw vents. Loading ramp above. Now with modern doors to tunnel.

Statement of Interest

Kilns had an output of 8000 bolls (Carmichael), of a complexity equalled only at a Raw Camps, Mid Calder, Midlothian (Skinner). Lime burning at Harelaw ceased in May 1887 (Martine). A number of derelict buildings cluster around the loading ramp. Quarry and kilns appear on the 1854 OS Map.
