Description

Circa 1785; subsequent alterations. 3-storey and basement, 3-bay classical facade of former house. Polished cream sandstone ashlar (stonecleaned). Channelled rustication at ground; tripartite doorpiece (much restored - now closed) with fluted stylised Corinthian pilasters and fluted frieze. 1st floor cill course with long and short rusticated quoins above; 1st floor windows architraved and corniced; mutuled eaves cornice and lead covered blocking course.

Timber sash and case windows; 12-pane, 15-pane at 1st floor. Ashlar coped skews; rebuilt stone stacks; grey slates.

INTERIOR: fine geometric stair survived general rebuilding as part of development of No 120 George Street (see separate listing).

RAILINGS: modern cast-iron spearhead railings and lamp standard.

Statement of Interest

Formerly had a shop built out to the 2 left bays at ground, and the doorway had been divided in two; also a mansard roof. Restored in 1984 by Robert Hurd & Partners as part of the modern building grafted onto the facade of the Tontine building for the TSB (see No 120 George Street). A Group with Nos 112-128 (even nos) George Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
