Buildings mainly by Thomas Aimers of Galashiels, for woollen
mills founded by Alexander Scott, 1865. Main tall block,
boiler house and joiners shop to W, low range to S. Some
alterations.
TALL BLOCK: built in 2 sections, both by Aimers; 3-storey
with loft. 8 bays to W (nearest river) built 1865-6, with
projecting square stair turret at SE corner. Lengthened to 17
bays 1871, stair turret raised with gable, clock and belfry
(latter now cut down). Small-paned windows; continuous
double-pitch slate roof with rooflights. Modernised office
range to roadside.
INTERIOR: floors supported on cast-iron columns (3 per bay);
ground floor fireproof, with full-depth brick vaults; single
central row of columns at loft (these shaped for bearing
drive shafts) supporting roof valley. Ground and loft now
have some suspended ceilings, machinery on intermediate
floors.
JOINERS WORKSHOP: probable original engine house; arched pend
at N end; some windows also round-arched; cast-iron-plate
water tank on roof.
BOILER HOUSE: probably built as larger engine house;
rectangular-plan; painted ashlar; cavetto cornice with rope
mouldings; wide slapping in N wall; 3 round-headed lights to
riverside (W). Interior with timber ceiling with decorative
plaster ceiling rose, 2 circular ventilator openings.
SOUTH RANGE: parallel to tall block with twin-gabled roadside
elevation; single storey; 10 regular bays; twin-gabled
flanks; large addition to S.
