Country house. 1821-34 by Ignatius Bonomi; built by Moody of Ushaw; for B.
J. Salvin. Sandstone ashlar with graduated Lakeland slate roof; rear
range rendered. Irregular plan with symmetrical front range, 2 storeys and
attics; 11 bays. Main elevation has channelled rustication. Giant tetrastyle
unfluted Ionic porte-cochere in central 3 bays contains one-storey, one-
bay fluted Ionic porch and flanking sashes. 6 panel round-headed door in
rusticated hollow reveal. Sashes above and in remaining bays have glazing
bars, some altered, aprons and plain reveals; blocked lunettes over those
on ground floor in end bays, with scrolled keystones and foliage-carved
spandrels. Outer bays project slightly and have wide pilasters flanking
windows. First floor string; top entablature and roof parapet, balustraded
over windows. Mansard roof has square-headed attic windows almost concealed;
tall ashlar chimneys with plinths and cornices. Two-storey rear domestic
wing.
Interior: Imperial stair with wreathed handrail and double curtail on
first central flight; Gothic cast iron bulustrade. Rear ground floor
passage has round-headed niches with enriched lugged mouldings; reception
room to right of entrance hall has panelled dado and rich rococo stucco
ceiling with fruit and flower decoration. Hall has modillioned cornice;
rich stucco cornices in other rooms.
C20 3-storey right rear extension is not of interest.
