12/45 The Old Shop and Rose Cottage

Two attached houses. C17, extended and minor alterations late C20.
Roughly squared stone walls; stone slate roof. Two 2-room houses
in line, one room deep, 1 1/2 storeys: single-storey extension on
right end. The Old Shop on left, Rose Cottage on right. Facade to
road: all windows to ground floor stone mullioned with hoodmoulds,
except to extension. On left late C20 boarded door, chamfered and
ovolo-moulded arris, Tudor arch, stone lintel and hoodmould. To
right 4, 2 and 3-light windows; boarded door up 3 stone steps,
flat concrete lintel, hoodmould., To right 2-light window with
deep stone lintel. Slight set-back to extension, 2 and single-
light windows with reconstructed stone surrounds: parapet gable.
Above: chimney on ridge, paired flues, plain cap. Wall carried up
into 2 stone gables, each with 2-light mullioned window with
hoodmould, parapet gable, cross-gablet apex. Late C20 chimney from
eaves to right. Two small gabled dormers to right, each with 2-
light wooden casements; ridge chimney between with moulded cap.
Level of ridge drops slightly at chimney. Parapet gable to right
with cross gablet apex. First sewing machine said to have-been
made in Rose Cottage by C. Keyte in 1842.
