Hotel. 1851, built by William Kirk of Lincoln for the Manchester, Sheffield
and Lincolnshire Railway Company. C20 alterations. Brick in Flemish bond,
colourwashed to front, rendered to sides and rear. Slate roof. T-shaped on
plan: 2-room front with stairs and services to rear. 3 storeys, 7 bays;
symmetrical, with central entrance now blocked (present entrances to left
and right returns). Plinth with 6 cellar openings, now mostly blocked,
beneath cambered rubbed brick arches. Angle pilasters, channelled above
first floor, with moulded stucco capitals and wreaths in the frieze,
supporting moulded cornice guttering. Floors divided by 3-course chamfered
brick bands. Ground floor: 6 recessed 12-pane sashes with stucco cills and
C20 decorative fans above, in round-headed recessed openings with outer
rubbed brick arches. 12-pane first floor sashes and unequal second floor
sashes with glazing bars under rubbed brick cambered arches. Stepped brick
frieze and gutter above. Raised stone-coped gables. Stacks to rear. Left
and right returns have bands between floors and pilaster details similar to
front. Interior not investigated. The Hotel (formerly The Yarborough
Arms)is a prominent landmark on the south Humber bank associated with the
former ferry terminal and one of the earliest buildings in the C19 village
of New Holland.
