Description

BUXHALL MILL GREEN
TL 95 NE

1/31 The Old Mill
-

GV II

House, early or mid C16 with alterations of late C17 and later. One storey
and attics. Timber-framed and plastered. Thatched roof with one C19/C20
eyebrow casement dormer. An axial chimnmey of C17/C18 red brick. Mainly mid
C20 small-pane casements. Boarded C20 entrance door. Although altered in
C17, the C16 house appears to have been of the unusual layout having a single-
bay open hall and a cross-entry within the service cell. The hall has
tension-braced studwork; the lower end partition in the hall has a strongly
cambered tie beam, and beyond it is a half-bay containing the original front
cross-entry doorway with 4-centred arched head. Some heavy 1st floor joists
in the cross-entry; other floors have C17 on-edge joists. An inserted C17
chimney in the cross-entry with lintelled open fireplace to hall, and a later
one backing onto it. The service end was extended to left in C17, formerly
with a half-hipped roof. A further cell was added to right in C18 or C19.
Various C20 extensions.
