Built by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1903 and one of his best houses. Large H-shaped
house of Cotswold manor type, built of coursed Hythe sandstone, quarried locally. This
stone is so soft and has weathered so much that the house would appear a genuine
C16 building from the outside if it were in the stone country. Two storeys
and attic. Nine windows. The outer wings have gables. Two gables between
these wings. In the centre is a large projecting five-sided bay with 5 windows,
each of 4 tiers of 2 lights, which light the music-room that contains the main
staircase of the house and a gallery. Tiled roof. Casement windows. The
north or entrance front has a projecting porch in the centre with 2 storeys
over it. Chimney breast at the ends of the wings. Service wing attached.
