Garden feature. C18 re-using doorway of c1630. For the Wentworth
Estate. c1630 doorway of limestone; upper entrance of ashlar sandstone;
rubble sandstone interior with brick vault. Set beneath overgrown earth
mound. Grotto-style entrance to curved tunnel which leads to vaulted
chamber, internal steps rise to landing and upper entrance. c1630
doorway: in Jacobean style with extravagantly-carved ornament to piers,
frieze and scrolled pedment; cartouche finial. Upper doorway:
shouldered lintel with cast-iron plaque.
Interior : subterranean circular room. Rebated ashlar surround to round-
arched tunnel doorway; small flanking doorways to two vaulted cells.
Stone steps with iron rail. Domical roof. Plaque over upper doorway
reads :
"There is a healing in the garden
When one longs for peace and pardon
Once past the gate no need to wait
For God is in the garden."
