Description

DARTMOUTH

SX874510 VICTORIA ROAD
673-1/8/282 (South side)
No.63

GV II

End house of terrace. Mid C19. Plastered stone rubble; end
stacks with painted brick chimneyshafts and pots; hipped slate
roof.
PLAN: Double-depth, with entrance passage to left and small
service block rear left.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; 2-window front. Plaster with plat band at
first-floor level. Round-headed front doorway to left with
moulded stucco surround interrupted by blocks of vermiculated
rustication. Recessed 6-panel door under plain fanlight.
Windows all C19 four-pane sashes with unusual horizontal
glazing bars to taller ground- and first-floor windows. All
have moulded architraves and blocks under the sills, and those
on first and second floors have Tudor-style hoodmoulds with
leafy label stops. Projecting eaves with plastered soffit to
hipped roof.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
This house is the left end of a terrace of contemporary
houses, with Nos 65-79 (odd) (qv) and No.81 (qv). It, and
No.81 at the other end, are taller than the houses between,
and all share a unified style. They all form part of a good
group of houses and shops dating from the second quarter of
the C19 alongside New Road (now Victoria Road), which was
built in 1825 along the edge of the infilled mill pond to
enable, for the first time, horse-drawn carriages in and out
of the town.
