Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue,now museum.1889,by Edward Salomons;altered.Red brick with sandstone dressings,slate roofs.T-shaped plan formed by rectangular main vessel at right-angles to street,with flanking wings to the gabled facade.Plain building but with elaborate Spanish and Saracenic motifs in the facade.Two storeys and three bays,symmetrical,the centre breaking forwards slightly;with plinth,diaper bands,etc.The centre has a large two-centred arched doorway with shafts,polychrome-banded extrados,recessed door with banded lintel,etc.,flanked by small triangular-headed lancet windows,and at first floor an arcaded five-light window with shafts,arched lights with linked segmental hoodmoulds,and sill- and head-bands;a cinquefoil motif over the centre,and dentilled coping with apex finial.The side wings,both gabled at right-angles to the main axis and that to the right containing a staircase,have ornamented first-floor bands,three-light windows at ground floor and two-light windows above,and gable copings with apex finials.The side walls of the main range have low plain segmental-headed windows at ground floor and circular windows above,mostly with stained glass.Interior not inspected.
