Parish church. C13, C15, restored C19 and C20. Dressed coursed
rubble and ashlar. Lead roofs, slate to chancel. Coped gables
and single ridge cross to east chancel. Single stack to east end
of north clerestory. Tower, nave, north and south aisles, south
porch, and chancel. Buttressed. The diagonally buttressed tower
with C20 parapet is set on a plinth with heavy moulded band over
and string course at each juncture of the 3 stages. There is a
single gargoyle to each side. The arched west window has 3
cusped lights. In the belfry are 4 C15 arched 2 light openings
with panel tracery. There are 2 rectangular stair lights and 4
round tie plates. On the east is a single clock face. Abutting
the north wall is a C20 ashlar and slate lean-to. The north
aisle is diagonally buttressed at the west and has a damaged
plinth band. A damaged string course, which drops under the
windows, extends to the west and east walls. Single 3 light C15
window with cusping under a flat arch with hood mould and
decorative label stops. To the left are 2 similar 2 light
windows. The east wall has a single restored, arched, 2 light
window with tracery and cusping. The C15 clerestory has 3
windows each with 2 cusped lights under a flat arch. Flanking
the top of each window are single ashlar strips, remnants of hood
moulds. At the juncture of aisle roof and clerestory is a
moulded band. The north chancel wall with evidence of extension
has a plinth and string course to the western most part and a
single C15 window with 2 cusped lights under a flat arch and with
hood mould. The east end is set on a plinth and has a single
arched 3 light window with flowing tracery. A string course
runs under. The south chancel has a central chamfered arched
doorway with hood mould over, flanked by single C15 2 light
windows with cusping, flat arches, hood moulds and label stops.
That on the right is set higher. A string course, broken by the
doorway extends under. The diagonally buttressed south aisle has
in the east wall a single C15 3 light window with cusped
reticulated tracery under a flat arch with hood mould and label
stops over. The south wall has a single C15 arched 2 light
window with tracery, cusping, hood mould and label stops. To the
left is a single C15 2 light window with cusping, flat arch hood
mould and label stops The south porch with single ridge cross
has a moulded arched entrance supported on 2 slim engaged columns
with moulded capitals and hood mould and label stops over. The
east and west walls each have a single small arched and cusped
light. The inner porch arched doorway has a hood mould and label
stops over. The west south aisle wall has a single C15 3 light
window with tracery and cusping under flat arch with hood mould
over. The clerestory openings correspond to the north.
Interior. 4 bay C13 nave arcades, the western most bays being
cut into by the tower. The north arcade has 2 octagonal columns
alternating with a single round column and semi-circular respond.
All have moulded capitals and support double chamfered arches
with a hood mould to the nave side. The south arcade has low
octagonal piers and moulded capitals supporting double chamfered
arches with hood mould to the nave side. 2 engaged octagonal
columns with moulded capitals support the double chamfered
chancel arch. The inner arch of the double chamfered tower arch
is supported on corbels. At the east end of the south nave wall
is an arched opening. In the nave are 3 corbels which would have
supported a former roof. In the south chancel wall is a C15
arched and cusped piscina. There is a late C19 mosaic reredos.
The north chancel wall has a fine monument to Roberti Curtys,
1680, consisting of a brass plaque with inscription set into a
broad ashlar frame decorated with stylised trees, flora and a
crest. There is a further monument to Philip Hall, 1780, with an
urn on the crown and a crest on the decorative apron. The north
chancel has a stained glass window by Mayer & Co., Munich and
London, 1855 of Hope and Faith. The furniture is C19 apart from
a C16 oak chest with iron fittings and a C17 altar table with
turned legs.
