GV II

Church, 1871-73, by Hill and Swan. Brick with stone dressings and sandstone
ashlar facing to principal east front. Hipped slate roof. 2 storeys and
basement. 5 bays to front. Flight of 12 stone steps leads up to Corinthian
tetrastyle portico in middle 3 bays, with full entablature continued over
end bays and supported on angle pilasters. Pediment with lunette surrounded
by foliate ornament. Round-headed door and window openings with archivolts
and impost mouldings continued as string courses. Leaded lights to end bays
of which ground-floor windows have balustraded aprons. Sashes to first
floor of middle bays and 3-panelled double doors below, with leaded-light
fanlights. Band between floors; parapet with balustraded panels to end
bays. Side elevations are of 7 bays. Blocked flat-arched basement windows
and round-headed windows with stone hood-moulds and impost bands to ground
and first floors. Leaded lights to ground-floor windows, sashes to first
floor where stone sills are continued as band. Later church hall adjoining
north-west corner is not of interest. Disused at time of survey, when the
galleried interior had been extensively damaged.
