II Farm
2.
1863. A model farm built for the Dowager Countess of Pembroke and designed by
Samuel Clarke. Somewhat damaged in 2 fires but still of considerable interest partly
for its compact layout of a large number of offices and partly, because it is faced in
a 'crazy-paving' type of random rubble. Slate roofs. The original layout included an
animal infirmary. To the North is a workmans cottage of 2 1/2 storeys with a bar window to
North and formerly round headed windows to the East. To the South of this is an arcaded
courtyard with linking sheds to a 1 1/2 storey coachhouse and to the main block. Round
headed windows, occasionally paired with overarches. To west of cottage is a circular
dovecote with conical slate roof and lantern, 2 ranges of pigeon holes below eaves and
various openings, below, including cross-loops (possibly for chickens). The East front of
the main range has projecting quarter hipped gabled shed in groups of 3 with round
arched windows. Opposite the entrance (dated 1863) is a pair of gables with between them
a small entrance with shouldered lintel and bellcote over. To south is a foldyard closed
by brick walls with bands of'crazy-paving' rubble and ashlar, rounded capping; pill-box
in South West corners. This farm building complex forms a important group for
agricultural and sociological reasons as well as architectural.
