Includes: No.9 SOUTHMILL STREET.
Probably merchant's warehouse, now betting shop and offices.
c.1860-70, altered. Sandstone ashlar at ground floor, red
brick with sandstone dressings above (roof not visible).
Rectangular plan on corner site. Four storeys and basement, 4
bays to Peter Street and 9 bays to Southmill Street; basement
and ground floor of front and of 1st bay of return side
altered as shop, but Southmill Street facade otherwise of
sandstone ashlar, with plinth, raised rusticated bands and
plain frieze; sashed windows without glazing bars, and
segmental-headed doorway to 3rd bay with enriched surround.
Upper floors: bracketed cornice over 1st floor, sill- and
head-bands to 3rd floor, dentilled and modillioned cornice,
all carried round; all windows sashed without glazing bars,
those at 1st and 3rd floors with moulded architraves, and
those at 2nd floor round-headed with hoodmoulds and linking
impost band carried round. Narrow chamfered corner, slightly
set back. Interior not inspected. Forms group with No.37
(Harvester House) on opposite corner of Southmill Street
(q.v.).
