Manufacturers' home trade warehouse, now club, offices etc.
c.1870-80. Probably iron-framed, with cladding of red brick,
sandstone dressings and slate roof. Rectangular plan, with
loading at rear. Eclectic style. Five storeys over basement, 6
bays, with stone banding and bracketed cornice to ground
floor, simple pilasters with some stone bands to next 3
floors, moulded sill-band to slightly set back top floor,
stepped frieze and cornice, and 2 panelled chimneys with
segmental-pedimented caps. Ground floor has segmental-headed
doorway to 4th bay, with heavily enriched pilastered surround
and frieze with attached lettering "BASIL HOUSE", former
doorway to 1st bay (altered as window) with similar surround,
a single-light window to the left of this, and coupled
square-headed windows over cellar openings in the other bays;
1st, 2nd and 3rd floors have coupled windows with ornamented
stone panels between the floors, those at 1st floor with
cornices and those at 3rd floor segmental-headed with
keystones and impost bands; top floor has smaller coupled
windows and single-light window to left. Interior not
inspected. Forms group with No.103 to left, and with Nos 109
and 111, and 113 to 119 to right, together comprising a
complete block of former warehouses.
