Holy Name Presbytery
GV II
Presbytery to Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Name. 1874. By
Henry Clutton. Orange brick with sandstone dressings, slate
roofs. Roughly L-shaped plan with main range projected towards
the street, this and the re-entrant enclosed by a projected
ground floor. Neo-Tudor vernacular style with
mullion-and-transom windows, high parapet. Mostly 3 storeys.
The single-storey projection to the street has a doorway to
the right with a moulded surround, the set-back continuation
in the re-entrant to the right of this has windows of 12 and 8
lights, and a balustraded parapet carries round the whole. The
end wall of the 3-storey main range behind the entrance block
has a triangular chimney feature up the centre, splayed
corners with transomed windows wrapped round, its south front
has coupled 6-light windows to all floors, and a high pierced
parapet carries round the whole; and attached to its further
end, enclosing an extruded chimney stack, is an early C20
single-storey stone link to the church. The set-back wing on
the north side has (inter alia) a 3-stage 6-light
stair-window. The rear is a 4-window range with sill-bands,
string-course over 2nd floor, plain parapet, and
mullion-and-transom windows mostly of 6 and 4 lights, with
hoodmoulds. (C20 addition at north end.) Forms group with the
Church of the Holy Name (q.v.).
