Congregational church. 1884 by Charles Bell of London. Red
brick with stone dressings under slate roofs. Cruciform plan.
Rectangular main body of church with 3 gabled transeptal
projections to north and south.
EXTERIOR: west front with a central 5-light window with
Geometric tracery flanked by polygonal turrets rising to
pinnacles. Below west window is a blind 6-bay wall arcade.
Either side of turrets are single pointed traceried windows of
2 lights over 2-bay blind arcades. Gabled porch entrances
right and left of these, each with a trefoiled entrance
doorway.
To south-west corner a 4-stage tower lit through lancets at
each stage and with engaged colonnettes to triple belfry
openings. Octagonal spire with 4 pepper-pot pinnacles at base.
The 3 transeptal projections to flanks each lit through 4
trefoiled lancets to ground stage and two pairs of pointed
2-light windows above: cusped octofoil lights in gable apexes.
INTERIOR: 4-bay arcade, the centre 2 bays opening into the
eastern pair of the 3 transeptal projections, outer bays both
blind. Centre pier of marble, with an annular ring and
stiff-leaf capitals. Moulded pointed arches. Outer bays with
clustered piers and stiff-leaf capitals. Gallery to 2 centre
open arcade bays, with continuous arcade panelling. West end
also with continuous gallery with similar arcading to parapet.
Roof with prominent panelled ashlaring and 2 registers of
arched braces.
East end with an arched recess defined by marble columns with
stiff-leaf capitals standing on corbels carved to represent
angels. Within recess is an organ. Pulpit, reading desk and
all benches intact. Tinted stained glass intact.
