TQ3279 TRINITY CHURCH SQUARE
636-1/5/810 Statue in centre of Trinity Church
02/03/50 Square
GV II
Statue of a king on a stone plinth, late C14 style. Erected in
the square before 1836, resited. Limestone with upper part and
most of sides and back restored in artificial (probably Coade)
stone. Back of statue quite plain as though designed for a
niche. Provenance uncertain but said to be one of 8 medieval
statues from the north end towers of Richard II's Westminster
Hall. Alternatively, could be one of a pair representing
Alfred the Great and Edward the Black Prince, made for the
garden of Carlton House in the C18.
All the listed buildings in Trinity Church Square form a
group.
