House, now museum. Late C18. Red brick in Flemish bond. Plain
tile hipped roof, brick stack on right.
2 storeys, attic and basement, 2 bays. 5 stone steps with
flanking attached railings approach recessed 6-fielded panel
door, upper panels glazed, panelled reveals, flanking narrow
pilasters and cut pediment. On right and to first floor each
has two 12-pane sashes, ground floor sashes have attached
shutters. Brick dentil band with stone cap, stone coped
parapet. Hipped dormer with 6-pane sash.
Charles Dickens was born in this house on 7th February 1812.
It was then called 1 Mile End Terrace, Landport, or 387 Mile
End Road. Listed Grade I as the birthplace of Charles Dickens.
