The Tower
GV II
Tower and small shop. Late C19. Accrington red brick with
bands of terracotta mouldings, sill and impost strings of
terracotta blocks; red tile roof, part with ridge cresting.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey, 1-bay front set back to left of 4-storey
tower. Tower arch is flanked by splayed walls on ground floor.
Upper floors are corbelled out above arch and defined by bands
of floral mouldings, continued at first floor across bay to
left. Within semicircular tower arch is 4-panel half glazed
shop door. First floor of tower has single pair of
round-headed 1/1 sash windows at front; on the second floor,
two faces have an oculus framed in terracotta; on third floor,
two single round-headed louvred lights, repeated on all faces.
Floral eaves band beneath pierced parapet encrusted with
terracotta rises at each corner to form a square pinnacle.
Bay to left has semicircular headed multi-pane shop window on
ground floor: on first floor, two round-headed 1/1 sash
windows: at eaves level, a lombardic frieze. Sill and impost
strings, arched over window heads, run across both fronts and
encircle tower.
INTERIOR: stairs with winders to first floor, ladders to upper
floors. Set in the left wall there is a tablet dated 1703
which plainly dates the adjoining property and was exposed
prior to the construction of the tower and shop.
