Dower house for Pencarrow, now farmhouse. Probably C17 origins, partly remodelled in
C18 and extended in early C19 and late C19 or early C20. Earlier range of stone
rubble with some brick in the rear wall and slate hung on the front elevation.
Asbestos slate roof with gable ends and parallel range and wing to rear. Rendered
end and axial stacks. Higher late C19 or early C20 range to left of snecked slate
stone with slate roof with hipped ends and axial and rear lateral stacks.
Plan: The house was considerably altered and extended in the C18/early C19 and late
C19 or early C20 and the original plan is uncertain. The earlier right hand range.
comprises a double depth plan with a wing to rear left forming an overall 'L' shaped
plan. It is possible that the front part of this range has C17 origins; of 3-room
and through passage plan, the lower end on left heated by an end stack, the hall
heated by an axial stack in the higher cross wall and the inner room heated by an end
stack. Whilst the higher end is on the right, the ground actually slopes down to the
right. Additionally the hall is considerably smaller than the inner room which
appears to have been used as a kitchen. The rear service rooms appear mid C18 to
early C19 and appear to have been added to form a double depth range, possibly
contemporary with the addition of the rear wing on left. However, there are several
straight joints in the masonry and with the C18 alterations and the unusual
modifications of a 3-room plan, several other interpretations may be equally valid.
In the late C19 or early C20 the house was considerably extended to the left with a
double depth range comprising two very large reception rooms with fine quality
joinery.
Exterior: 2-storeys. Symmetrical 4-window front on left and regular 3-window front
on'right. The higher late C19 or early C20 range on left comprises 2-bays with
mullion and transom windows flanking central large glazed doors which have fine
quality painted glass. Above two 8-light mullion and transom windows flanking two
similar 6-light windows. The lower earlier range on right is slate hung; panelled
C19 door to left of centre flanked by two 18-pane sashes with a 4-over 6-pane sash to
right. Above are two 8-pane sashes with a 4-over 6-pane sash to right.
Interior: The earlier right hand range has several C18 2-panelled doors with HL
hinges and the central room with almost complete early to mid C18 panelling and
moulded cornice with C19 slate chimney-piece. Later C19 stair to rear of earlier
range with barley-sugar twist balusters and moulded rail. Late C19 or early C20
range has complete joinery and fittings of a high quality with overmantles to
chimney-pieces and with moulded cornices of C18 style.
