10/125 Palace Printers and The Old Palace
-
21.4.76 (formerly listed as the range of
buildings incorporating the
remains of the Stannary Prison
GV II*

Two shops; incorporating parts of the former Great Hall of the Duchy Palace; used in
the C19 and early C20 as a slaughterhouse. The present building is largely of the
mid C19, but the main structure of the walls is probably of the late C13; C20
alterations. Slatestone rubble with Pentewan stone dressings to archway; slate roof
with ridge coping tiles and gable ends, gable end stack to left.
The 2 shops are in the centre of the range, with archway to left and right; the
archway to left takes the building over a stream, which runs down to the River Fowey
to the east, and is also described as part of Shire House (q.v.) which adjoins to
left. Internally the building has been much altered, with later partition walls.
2 storeys; at ground floor there are the remains of 3 buttresses, with 2 C20 shop
windows between and C20 door to right. To end right is a flat arch through to
passage to rear of building. To left is a pointed arch which chamfered Pentewan
stone dressings, Pentewan stone quoins to left, jamb cut back to right. At first
floor 3 2-light windows and one 3-light window with brick segmental head above the
passage entrance to right.
The right side wall has blocked doorway to left and right; the masonry has been much
rebuilt. The left side has the springings for a rear archway. 2-storey rear wing in
rubble, possibly of C17, with external stack with slate weathering; end wall of rear
wing rebuilt in C20 blockwork. The Coinage Hall (q.v.) abuts to rear left. The
passageway to the left of the building has granite paving over the water channel.
Interior Not inspected.
