9/186 Lantern on churchyard wall of
- Church of St John about 6 metres
east of lychgate

GV II

Lantern. Late C19. Wrought iron and glass on a granite plinth. The plinth is
carved with the inscription "Lighten our darkness we beseech thee O Lord", and the
initials J.N.G. and E.G. These are probably for James Nutcombe Gould (1849-1899)
and Edith Gould (1859-1900), who are buried nearby. Above is the elaborate iron
frame of the lantern, Gothic in style with a cross on top. Lantern is 10-sided
with a shaped top; 8 of the sides are glazed, the centre-pieces being of the bulls-
eyes of crown-glass sheets. The lantern originally contained an oil lamp, but is
now lit by electricity.
