GV II

Pair of cottages now 1 dwelling. Dated 1873. By Paley and
Austin. For the Furness Railway Company (plan). Dressed,
snecked red sandstone, red tile roofs. Elongated single-storey
range with 2, gabled cross-wings, that on left with attic
storey. Chamfered plinth, ovolo-moulded mullioned windows.
Projecting gable on left has Tudor-arched doorway on right of
4-light transomed window having casements with glazing bars
and relieving arch; 4-light attic window and gable slit
beneath pierced, wave-patterned bargeboard. Centre has 'ABBEY
GATE COTTAGES 1873' on plaque flanked by 3-light windows.
Projecting gable to right lit by 4-light transomed window
beneath slit and pierced bargeboard; main range to right has
door beneath eaves and gabled right return. Left end of main
range has front catslide and 3-light window in left return.
Ashlar stacks to each crosswing, to centre and to left end
have grouped octagonal flues on shared bases (right crosswing
stack truncated). C20 flat-roofed addition to rear not of
special interest.
