House, now unoccupied. c1600, altered late C18-early C19 and mid-late C19 when
it was considerably extended. Timber framed house, with brick, galleted rubblestone
and tile-hung additions, the later C19 work of red brick in Flemish bond with ashlar
dressings. Plain tile roofs. Original house 2 storeys with loft, 4 bays with 2 1/2
bay cross-wing at west end, this truncated by wing added across south front of
2 storeys with attic, 4 bays.' South elevation (later C19, main entrance elevation):
left bay wider, slightly projecting and gabled. Cemented plinth, ashlar quoins
to angles and window surrounds, windows mullioned and transomed with casements.
Doorway, to right of bay 2, has 6-panel door in chamfered surround protected by
gabled timber porch with cusped spandrels, braced king post to gable, and scalloped,
chamfered bargeboards with cusped tracery and pendant finials. 2-light window to
left of porch ; canted bay window with hipped roof to right; three 2-light windows
above and three 2-light gabled attic dormers, the gables treated similarly to porch
but plainer. Gabled left bay has 4-light window to ground floor with small-pane
glazing and 3-light window to first floor and attic. Moulded ashlar kneelers and
coping to reused verges of gables. Lateral stack to rear of lift bay with two
diagonally-set flues. Rear: Original house has cross-wing projecting on right.
Ground floor mostly masked by added outshuts of brick and, at right end, of galleted
rubblestone; left-hand outshut has board door (with 2 small glazed panels at top)
on right of 3-light diamond-paned window. First floor, where exposed, has close-
studded timber frame with posts, studs, tension braces to main range and top of
one arched brace to left side of cross-wing; gable of wing has tie-beam, 3 main
posts supporting collar, then 2 posts with short collar and single post to apex.
Various C19 and C20 windows. Cross-ridge stack to right side of bay 2 (lower part
C18, upper part later C19); another in front roof pitch of bay 1 with one behind.
Left gable has raised verge with kneeler and coping in front. Right return: The
gabled ends of the 2 ranges, all in later C19 brickwork as front, left bay taller
and slightly projecting; outshut gable on right is of brick on galleted rubblestone
base with decorative tile-hung gable. Left return: Gabled addition on left and
added lean-tg against ground floor of cross-wing, the former with galleted rubble-
stone ground floor and decorative tile-hung gable, the latter of brick with boarded
up pointed-arched-windows (later C19);, first floor of wing decorative tile-hung.
Interior: Victorian south range has open-well stair with open string, turned
balusters, tapering square section newels and acorn finials and pendants; modillion
cornice to hall and to stair landing which has triple-arched arcade with keyed
archivolts. c1600-style panelling to various rooms in both the C19 and original
ranges. Original, north, range has parts -of timber-framed structure visible
including chamfered spine and cross beams with lamb's tongue stops. Back stair
and attic stair late C18-early C19 style having closed strings, square-section
balusters and gun-barrel type newels, the back stair dog-legged and with 2-panel
door to cupboard underneath it. Roof of original range is fine with queen-post
trusses, clasped through purlins jointed at trusses, coupled rafters (numbered)
and arched wind braces; the brick stack to bay 2 rises in position of earlier stack
(the 3 pairs of rafters at this point being replacements; loft floorof wide tongued-
and-grooved boards (disintegrated).
