House, C14 altered C16, and C16 later alterations. Timber framed with rendered
infill; plain tile roofs. Hall and cross-wings plan. On left, C14 2-storey
solar wing, 2 bays deep. Central C14 open hall, with a through passage at
either end, of 3½ bays internally; floor inserted C16 and subsequently removed;
a further bay to right, partitioned off, formerly open but with floor inserted.
On right, C16 2-storey cross wing, 2 bays deep. C20 leaded casement windows
throughout. Garden elevation: hall range has ground floor underbuilt and
rendered, with 2 buttresses; 1st floor close studded (some studs replacements)
with braces; old board door at left end with 3-light side-window of lapped glass
panes; main doorway on right is Tudor-arched with leaf-moulded spandrels and
moulded surround, and has 2 windows to either side; 3 1st floor windows. Wings
are timber-framed with arch-braced crown-post trusses, right wing jettied and
with squarer panels then the left wing which has taller panels and a more
steeply-pitched roof; various C20 windows, but the left wing has, to its right
return, an old 3-light window to 1st floor with hollow-moulded surround and
hollow-moulded mullions; an external lateral brick stack to each wing, that on
right with paired diagonally-set flues. Rear: hall has opposing doorways (that
on left is Cl9 addition) and external brick stack with paired diagonally-set
flues. Right wing close-studded with 1st floor jetty, scissor braces and one
window on each floor. Left wing has large panels, arched braces and hipped roof
with gablet; on its right an added stair outshut, of brick on ground floor, with
2 small windows in the gable having wood stanchions and the upper window with
diamond-leaded glazing. Left return: 2 old windows on 1st floor with narrow
lights and hollow-moulded mullions, of 4 lights at front, 2 lights at rear.
Right return: on left side, a hollow-moulded mullion window to each floor of 4
lights below, 2 lights above; inserted door to right of stack with a 3-light
diamond-set mullion window to right on each floor; 2 small lights to right with
eaves stack rising from eaves above; a 1-light window to right on each floor.
Interior: good quality timber framing exposed throughout. The hall has: mid
C20 C16-style panelled dado; C16 moulded brick fireplace (formerly with another
similar fireplace above to serve inserted 1st floor (now removed)) at left end,
through passage defined by open partition with moulded posts and moulded doorway
at front end, the cross-beam heavily-moulded and brattished and supporting later
balustrade with 2 C16-style pyramidal finials at centre, moulded Tudor arched
doorway into right hand bay; wall posts arch-braced to tie-beams, central tie-
beam steeply cambered; in roof, full-height wattle and daub partition between
hall and right-hand bay; timbers in both sections are sooted and comprise
crown-post trusses the posts square on plan with arched braces 4 ways, collar
purlin and collared rafters. Left-hand wing: on ground floor a moulded 4-
centred-arched doorway with half-pyramidal stops into front room which has
moulded beams and joists, the latter broad, close-set and with stepped cyma
stops, the front central wall post with capital-style moulding; the rear room
also has moulded joists but the doorway into it from the hall is later, with a
mid-C20 Tudor-arched head; old door between rooms; on 1st floor access from
stair landing is up steps with central handrail having moulded splat balusters
and ogee finial to newel; 1st floor rooms have moulded beams, cambered central
tie-beam, arch-braced crown-post trusses, collar purlin and collared rafters.
Right wing: in roof a central full-height wattle and daub partition between
bays; crown-post roof with short square posts, arch braces (4 ways), collar
purlin and collared rafters, the timber unsooted. Photographs in the National
Monuments Record show a timber in the north-east wall of the house inscribed "GB
1690 JB". The house is reputed to have been the home of Justice Bradshaw,
President of the Council in the time of Charles I and one of the signatories of
the King's death warrant.

House. C14 with C16 cross wing to south. Timber framed with rendered infill, plain
tiled roofs. Brick stacks to ends and diagonal stack to rear. Great hall to centre
and left with end cross wings. 2 storeys, jettied on first floor of wings. 3 framed
bays to centre, corner bracing and braced crown-post to wings. Close studding across
the first floor to centre range. Irregular fenestration of leaded casement windows,
3 on the first floor. Arched planked door to right of centre with carvings in
spandrels. Right hand return front: 2 original mullioned windows , now blocked.
Further door. Rear elevation: Jettied wings with large, extensive, framing exposed
on ground floor. Close studding in first floor to rear of west wing.
Interior: Great Hall - dado panelling, Tudor arched brick fireplace, arched oak
doors. Considerable framing exposed throughout the house.
