WALSHAM LE WILLOWS
THE STREET (NORTH SIDE)
Nos. 1,2 & 3 Guildhall
(formerly listed as Guildhall, Church Street)

GV
II

A row of 3 cottages, formerly 4, but originally a single building. C16.
Timber-framed and weatherboarded; plaintiled roof, hipped on left, gabled on
right. 2 storeys: 6 bays. 2 internal red brick chimney-stacks, one C16 with
4 attached rectangular shafts set diagonally on a rectangular base, the other
later with a high plain square shaft: both appear from inside to be
insertions. Various 2-light and 3-light C20 casement windows, some small-
paned; 4 plank doors, irregularly spaced. A fire insurance sign on the upper
front wall. High quality very heavy timberwork inside: exposed ground-floor
ceilings have main beams with 3"-4" chamfers and triangle stops; wide closely-
spaced unchamfered joists. At the west end (part of No.1) one bay has the
remains of a characteristic service-end arrangement, with evidence for
doorways, dividing partition, and the slide for a blocked window on the rear
wall. Exposed studding also in this one bay, the studs very closely-spaced.
On the upper floor, tie-beams without braces, roof with principal rafters.
This is a puzzling building said on documentary evidence to be a rebuilding on
the site of the former parish guildhall, but, from the quality of the
structure, more likely to be a conversion of the Guildhall building itself.
