House, now a shop. No.8A covers most of the upper storeys and
contains 3 flats. Early C19 front, mid-to-late C16 core.
Timber-framed; fronted in early C19 white brick with a plain
parapet and moulded stone cornice. Roof tiled and steeply
pitched.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attics. 3 window range: 12-pane sashes
to both upper storeys in plain reveals with flat gauged
arches. One segmental-headed dormer. A C20 shop front to the
ground storey has ornate C19 console brackets at each end of
the fascia. The Skinner Street frontage has 2 small-paned
sliding sash windows to the 2nd storey.
INTERIOR: extensive cellars with large chamfered main beams.
One small vaulted section on a lower level, in flint and Tudor
brick, runs below the street. The 2-bay front range, which was
probably originally jettied, has main cross-beams with a
shallow multiple roll moulding and was initially divided into
2, with a similar arrangement on the 1st storey. Both
partition walls have been removed. A section of good studding
exposed on the upper north wall.
The layout of the upper storeys is complex, with some main
components of the timber-framed rear range, fronting on
Skinner Street, exposed. The top storey is an addition, but
still timber-framed, with wallplates and tie-beams exposed.
