2.10.51. Bowthorpe Hall

Large house, now school. C17 with facade C1700. Red brick with
rendered plinth; 4 brick chimneys (3 re-built) T-Plan. 2 storeys;
main facade: 6-window range, symmetrical. Panelled (formerly double-
leaf ?) door in moulded wooden architrave is flanked by rusticated
Ionic pilasters, under a pediment. Coved niche above has bust of
a Roman Emperor in slightly projecting bay with rusticated brick
quoins. 3 ground and first-floor windows to right and left (some
blind with painted glazing bars) have sashes with intersecting
glazing bars, all under flat gauged brick arches. Eaves cornice
has dentils and egg & dart decoration under carved modillions.
Contemporary facade at right angles to left has French window and
one first floor sash window flanked by blind recesses with painted
glazing bars. Stepped gable. Irregular buttress at right end of main
facade with original quoins and C20 brick repairs may indicate
another wing, now demolished. 3 stepped gables to rear, one with
kneelers on projecting stair tower. Interior not inspected during
the re-survey.
