Description

ST13SE COTHELSTONE CP

CUSHUISH
3/99 Russet Way and Doveleys
II

Cottage, now divided. Late C16, marly C17, modernized C20. Render over
random rubble, slate roof, brick stacks at gable ends and to right of
cross passage. 3 cell and cross passage plan. 2-storeys, irregularly
placed C20 2 and 3-light casements with small 2-light stair window set
slightly to right above original entrance, C20 door, with inserted C20
door end bay left, entrance to "Russet Way", originally the kitchen.
Interior; the interesting feature of this house is a corn drying kiln
on the left of the now blocked fireplace. Circular about 1.5 metres
across, there is a projecting ledge about 300 mm across, about 750 mm
from the ground. There is a glazed opening on the South side with 2
blocked openings on the West which would have connected with the hearth.
To the right of the fireplace is a bacon curing chamber, with a tiny
wooden lancet window, blocked externally. Chamfered beam with runout
stops. Fireplace backing onto the cross passage in "Doveleys" modern as
are the others, with the original stairs sited to the left.
(VAG Report, unpublished SRO, November 1980).
