House, formerly inn. C15 - early C16 wing of cruck construction to centre, with
later C16 2-bay cross wing to left and C17 cross bay to right. Considerably
rebuilt and refenestrated C19. Whitewashed brick and roughcast on granite
rubble base, with some timber framing in cross wings and at left end of central
wing. Thatched roofs, rebuilt brick chimneys to right side and to right of
cross passage. One storey,attic and cellar, with 2-storey bay to right. 4
bays, the outer bays gabled and projecting, with former cross passage at left
end of central wing. Horizontal sliding sashes to ground floor, barred wooden
casements to upper storey. Left bay is blind to front but has 2-light window in
right return, and 3-light windows to left side, the upper window in thatched
dormer. Central wing has 3-light windows, 2 to ground floor, one in thatched
dormer to right, and a C20 barred wooden window to left of door. Door is C19-
early C20 board door with segmental head and 3 steps. Blocked doorway to cross
passage, with roughly arched lintel. Right bay has 3-light windows and one
single light to ground floor right. INTERIOR: central wing has 3 cruck trusses,
all with one complete blade and one incomplete blade, and all with saddle tops.
Original roof retained below present one. Left bay of this wing has C17 spine
beam with partial ovolo moulding, and stop-chamfered joists. Altered fire-
place. Left wing retains some substantial timbers, including truss with rough
ogee principals, heavy purlins, and smoke-blackened rafters in front bay. Front
bay also has remains of large altered fireplace.
